Session 1 : Are You in Compliance? Infection Controls and OSHA Review

Course Description

This course presents an in-depth explanation of the CDC’s and OSHA’s guidelines for dental offices. We will review of the CDC guidelines for infection control in the dental healthcare setting, review OSHA’s blood borne pathogen standard’s guidelines, discuss safety data sheets (“SDS”) and Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (“GHS”) hazard statements, and general office safety standards. We will also talk about strategies to improve infection control in the office in a practical manner.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the CDC and OSHA guidelines for dental office safety.

• Understand why these guidelines are important for the health and safety of the dental staff and the general public.

• Understand potential areas of risk in a dental office.

• Have the knowledge to implement policies and procedures to mitigate the risk in the dental office.

Lisa Kane, DMD, President and Owner: Dental Office Compliance of New England (DOC4NE)

Lisa assists dental practices in complying with the myriad of regulations and best practices promulgated by State dental boards, OSHA and the CDC. Lisa conducts office walk-throughs; creates customized plans and protocols for dental offices; teaches infection control, medical emergency and risk management classes; and provides consulting services to help offices improve their quality care and overall efficiency. Prior to forming DOC4NE, she practiced dentistry in the Greater Boston Area for over 20 years. Lisa received her DMD from Tufts University School of Medicine and her BS from Brandeis University.

Session 2 : Risk Management for Dental Practices

Course Description

This course will help dentists better understand key risks in their practices and how to mitigate them. It will review the most common malpractice claims and State board complaints, explain the professional standard of care, discuss ways to communicate more effectively with patients, and describe requirements and best practices for informed consents and patient charts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key clinical and business risks in their practices;
  • Apply risk reduction techniques;
  • Teach their staffs how to be more risk-aware;
  • Improve the clarity and effectiveness of communications with patients; and
  • Strengthen clinical documentation to enhance patient treatment and reduce their own liability.

Russell Kane, COO and Compliance Consultant – DOC4NE: Russell manages DOC4NE’s operations as well as provides compliance services, with a focus on HIPAA and risk management. Russell spent the majority of his career in the financial services industry, where he served as both a mutual fund Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel of a global asset management firm. He has extensive experience with helping clients understand applicable laws and regulations and drafting required plans and protocols. Russell received his BA from Columbia University and his JD from New York University School of Law

Session 3 : Pain Management for the Dentists

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The current status of the prescription Opioid crisis will be defined at the national and state levels. The various types of orofacial pain and the appropriate treatment strategies for each diagnosis will be discussed together with a comparison of the use of opioids, non-opioid medications, and non-pharmacologic options for safe and effective pain management. Best practice guidelines for pain control after different types of dental procedures will be evaluated. The risks, benefits, alternatives, storage, and disposal of controlled substances will be detailed. Simple means of identifying and managing patients at risk for substance misuse will be described. Regulatory and legal requirements will be documented. Resources for the safe use of opioids will be provided.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to:

• Summarize the current national and local prescription opioid crisis

• Discuss the diagnosis of acute and chronic orofacial pain conditions and the safe and effective pain management strategies for each diagnosis

• Evaluate the risks, benefits, and alternatives of a wide variety of pain medications including the risks of misuse and abuse associated with opioid medications

• Define the role of the dentist and dental team in pain management, risk assessment and mitigation

David A Keith, BDS, FDSRCS, DMD attended Guy’s Hospital Dental School, University of London, where he received his BDS degree in 1966. He obtained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1970 and his DMD from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1983. He is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at HSDM and Visiting OMFS at MGH. He is retired from clinical practice and continues to pursue his interests in temporomandibular joint disorders and Orofacial pain.

Massachusetts AGD is designated as an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by the AGD for Fellowship/Mastership and membership maintenance credit. Approval does not imply acceptance by a state or provincial board of dentistry or AGD endorsement. The current term of approval extends from January 2, 2024 to January 1, 2028. Provider ID# 219307
