Tues., April 14: Trends in Airway Management

Speaker: Dr. Nathan Saydyk

Course Description: This comprehensive continuing education course bridges the gap between traditional restorative dentistry and modern airway management. Participants will begin by mastering the anatomical structures of the upper airway, gaining a deep understanding of how these tissues influence both normal respiration and sleep-disordered breathing. We will explore the systemic health impacts of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and provide clinical teams with the practical screening protocols necessary to identify at-risk patients within the dental setting.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the key anatomical structures of the upper airway and their role in normal breathing and sleep-disordered breathing.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and understand the impact of airway obstruction on systemic health.
  • Implement practical screening protocols in the dental office to identify patients who may be at risk for sleep-disordered breathing.
  • Explain the role of oral appliance therapy (OAT) in the management of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, including indications, limitations, and collaboration with medical providers.
  • Discuss the evolution of airway dentistry beyond OSA treatment, including its relationship to comprehensive diagnosis, esthetics, and functional treatment planning.
  • Identify how impaired airway development during growth can contribute to common adult dental problems including crowding, esthetic concerns, and functional instability.
  • Integrate airway considerations into comprehensive dental treatment planning to better manage patients with complex esthetic, restorative, and functional challenges.
