Course Title: Periodontal Surgery in Everyday Practice -
Registration/Continental Breakfast will begin each day at 8am
Course will begin at 8:30AM and Conclude at 5:00PM
Day 1 – Foundational surgical knowledge, atraumatic extractions, and bone augmentation
Course Overview:
Surgical success begins with a solid anatomic and physiological understanding of blood flow, wound healing, and patient selection. Day 1 will focus on the underlying blood supply, wound healing, and patient considerations that drive surgical decision making. Peri- and post-operative pharmacology will be reviewed. Incision, flap, and suture design as well as wound healing will be discussed as it pertains to periodontal surgery. The day will also include atraumatic extraction of teeth, a review of material selection for bone augmentation (bone, membranes, and growth factors), bone augmentation techniques for horizontal and vertical ridge augmentations, and a hands-on for socket management of the intact socket vs. a socket with a dehiscence. Day 1 will wrap up with a discussion of post operative management of bone augmentation procedures, including management of complications.
Learning Objectives:
· To learn the biological basis for making decisions about incisions, flaps, and suturing
· To learn appropriate pre-, peri-, and post- operative management of surgical patients
· To understand the materials and techniques available for surgical extractions and bone augmentation
· To learn what is possible to achieve with bone augmentation with our current dental materials
Day 2 – Soft tissue augmentation, periodontal disease treatment, and crown lengthening
Course Overview:
Accurate diagnosis is critical for the proper management of deficient or excess soft tissue. Day 2 will begin with diagnosis and treatment planning options for mucogingival defects. This will include an overview of soft tissue phenotype, types of soft tissue grafting materials, incision design, and flap management. We will also discuss the rationale for esthetic and functional crown lengthening and review the indications for each. Additionally, periodontal diagnosis and treatment planning (flap surgery, osseous resection, and regeneration) will be discussed. The day will include hands-on exercises in soft tissue grafting as well as esthetic and functional crown lengthening. Day 2 will conclude with a discussion of normal wound healing, post-operative complications, and their management.
Learning Objectives:
· To understand the principles of soft tissue diagnosis and phenotype assessment
· To learn appropriate incision, flap, and grafting techniques for the management of mucogingival defects
· To understand the indications and decision-making process for esthetic versus functional crown lengthening
· To understand when periodontal surgery is needed and what surgery may be best suited for specific clinical indications
· To recognize normal wound healing patterns and appropriate manage post-operative complications
