Course Description:

This course equips dental practitioners with the clinical knowledge and regulatory updates required for safe, responsible pain management. Participants will examine the dentist's role in mitigating the opioid epidemic through the implementation of multimodal analgesia strategies, combining non-opioid medications as the first line of defense. The course provides clear, practical instruction on using State Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to identify high-risk patient behaviors and prevent substance diversion. Clinicians will also learn validated screening tools to identify substance use disorders, protect vulnerable patient populations, and confidently navigate local addiction referral networks. This course is designed to meet state dental board licensing mandates for controlled substance education.

Course Objectives:

  • Implement Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Dental Association (ADA) safe prescribing guidelines regarding optimal dosing and day limits for dental procedures.
  • Navigate the state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) to check patient histories and recognize behavioral red flags of drug seeking.
  • Execute a brief intervention and properly refer a patient suspected of substance use disorder to an appropriate local treatment facility.
