Use of Botulinum Toxin in the Treatment of TMD and Orofacial Pain

Course Description:

This class is a hands-on experience designed to train the participants to safely use Botulinum toxin to treat painful conditions of the jaw and face. This course will also provide a hands-on experience giving Trigger Point Injections in the head and neck.

Course Objectives:

This course will be a hands on class that will provide knowledge in:

  • Indications for use of botulinum toxin in the treatment of TMD and Orofacial Pain. 
  • How to use botulinum toxin in the treatment of TMD and Orofacial Pain. 
  • Relevant anatomy related to the injections
  • Mechanism of action of botulinum toxin 
  • Practical experience by injecting each other with local anesthetic or sterile saline. 
  • Current research in using botulinum toxin for treatment of pain. 

About Dr. Cohen:

Dr. Joseph R. Cohen is a specialist in Orofacial Pain who is recognized both nationally and internationally for his expertise in diagnosing and treating Orofacial Pain, including temporomandibular joint disorders, migraine and tension headaches, atypical tooth pain, trigeminal neuralgia, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. 

Dr. Cohen has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally including many lectures to the American Headache Society, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and several national Dental Sleep Medicine meetings. He also has also presented at the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the American Academy of Pain Management. Dr. Cohen’s international lectures include being a featured speaker at The International Facial Pain Meeting in Brazil (ICOT), National Facial Pain meetings in Spain, Israel, Canada and in Ireland. 

Dr Cohen is a section editor for the Journal “Cranio" and is a frequent reviewer for several Journals including: The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), Triple O, American Headache Society, and many others.

 Dr. Cohen is a diplomate and past president of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and a , Fellow and Past President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and has been selected to be a Fellow of the American Headache Society where he is a past OFP Section chair. He is also a diplomate of the Academy of Integrative Pain Management and a member of many professional organizations including the American Dental Association, American Pain Society, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the Pierre Fouchard Academy.

He was the founder and director of Southwest Pain Management Associates in Arizona for over 30 years where he has treated thousands of pain and sleep disorder patients.

Having retired from private practice, he is now Assistant Professor at the Arizona School for Dentistry and Oral Health, where he is director of the Orofacial Pain (OFP) Program and is currently Adjunct faculty at the Orofacial Pain Center at UCLA. 

He was recently appointed to be a Commissioner on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), where he is now the chairperson of the Orofacial Pain Review Committee that has to review and approve the content of all specialty education programs for this new specialty. 

Dr. Cohen is a graduate of the University of Tennessee Dental School, received advanced training in Orofacial Pain at UCLA, and has been in private practice in Phoenix since 1971. He has authored many articles and has contributed to the “Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of TMD and OFP” published by Quintessence.
