Swish into CE Madness in March Webinar Series: Five AGD student chapters across North America are coming together to provide a 5-part webinar series, every Wednesday at 8pm EST in the month of March! There will be a variety of dental topics covered. All dental professionals and dental students are invited to attend at no charge. All attendees will receive 1-hour CEU lecture for each webinar attended.

Practice Management Pearls

With Dr. James Cottle March 2 at 8pm EST

Course Description: A very high percentage of dental school graduates will become private practitioners, very likely becoming an owner of their own practice. Often these days, new graduates will begin their careers as an associate dentist and will be searching for a job upon graduation. Successfully leading a dental practice requires knowledge of business principles, people management skills and a vision to create the practice of their dreams. This session will highlight numerous “pearls” that, from the speaker’s point of view, can help lead a dental professional to practice success.

Course Objectives:

  1. To emphasize some fundamental principles of what it means to be a professional.

2. To consider the myriad of topics related to owning and operating a dental practice and highlighting numerous “pearls” that can help bring a practice into a successful reality.

3. To review some techniques that should be practiced prior to a job interview.

About the Speaker: Dr. Cottle graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1981, then completed a General Practice Residency program at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. He started a private general dentistry practice in Westerville, OH in 1983. His interest in teaching began while a he was a dental student and he was very fortunate to have been offered a part-time teaching position in 1984 allowing him to both practice and teach his entire career. In 2015, he transitioned to a full time faculty position at OSU. He is the course director of the Practice management curriculum and the current Associate Director of the OSU GPR program. Dr. Cottle is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is very dedicated to organized dentistry. He is a Past President of the Columbus Dental Society and is a trustee of the Ohio Dental Association Foundation.

Tooth Surface Loss: How Do We Generate Restorative Space?

With Dr. Kenneth Kurtz March 9 at 8pm EST

Course Desctiption: Esthetic dental reconstructions are considered elective procedures. However, in some instances, damage from bulimia or other destructive habits require invasive restorative therapies to restore the patients’ ability to interact with friends and family in a confident manner. Challenges in material selection and dealing with catastrophic failure, including my 1st patient “selfie” will be elucidated in a patient requiring “elective esthetic dental treatment.”

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the challenges of conservative management of tooth surface loss
  2. Utilize the team approach for an improved patient outcome
  3. Crown material and luting agent considerations

About the Speaker: Dr. Kenneth Kurtz is a Cum Laude graduate of SUNY Albany and received his DDS degree from the New York University College of Dentistry. After practicing general dentistry for a dozen years, Dr. Kurtz received prosthodontic specialty training at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Maxillofacial Prosthetic training at the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery/Bronx VAMC. He completed the NYU Implant Fellowship, directed by Dr. Dennis Tarnow, in 2009. Dr. Kurtz is board certified in prosthodontics, is a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists, the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics, the Royal College of Surgeons Scotland (Glasgow), and the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. He holds dual appointments in the Departments of Dentistry and Otorhinolaryngology at Montefiore Medical Center where he serves as the maxillofacial prosthodontist for the multidisciplinary craniofacial team for the Children Hospital at Montefiore and the head & neck cancer team. His practice is limited to prosthodontics & maxillofacial prosthetics is located in New Hyde Park NY, “Academic Prosthodontics of Long Island” (AP-LI.com).

Suturing Techniques for Successful Post-Operative Healing

With Dr. Mai-Ly Duong March 16 at 8pm EST

Course Description: Oral surgical procedures are common in the practice of general dentistry. Proper suturing technique is an important part of the post-operative healing. This course will review the most common suturing techniques that will lead to successful healing and reducing the risk for complications of the surgical site. There will be some hands-on demonstrations over the video. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to obtain the following materials to follow along with the course: straight needle holders, #15 scalpel, 2-3 sets of sutures (3-0 or 4-0 chromic gut, 3-0 or 4-0 vicryl, or 3-0 or 4-0 silk), banana or kiwi

Course Objectives:

  1. To discuss armamentarium, suture materials and needles
  2. To review common suturing techniques: interrupted, continuous and criss-cross
  3. To efficiently perform vertical mattress, horizontal mattress, and sling suture

Real Life after Dental School: What to Expect

With Dr. Richard Mounce March 23 at 8pm EST

Course Description: Ever wonder what life is like after Dental School? Should you buy a practice, association, go into the US Military, public health, specialize, or another path? Dr. Rich Mounce will present an unfiltered and unbiased discussion of the opportunities and challenges that awaits the recent graduate. Aple time for questions and answers will be available.

Course Objectives:

  1. Discuss the options the recent graduate has after dental school
  2. Discuss the opportunities, benefits and risks of the options above
  3. Discuss solutions and strategies to solve specific "pain points" experienced many recent graduates

About the Speaker: Dr. Mounce attended Northwestern University Dental school in Chicago, graduating in 1985. He completed his endodontic residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in 1991. Since graduation he has worked in a wide variety of settings including ownership, associateship, in public health and others. Aside from clinical practice Dr. Mounce has a long history of lecturing and teaching endodontics worldwide and has written hundreds of articles for dental trade magazines.

Injection Moulding Warm Composite Resin to Treat Anterior Dilemas

With Dr. Taras Konanec - March 30 at 8pm EST 

Course Description: Learn how to use injection molding to create infinity edge margins and mirror-smooth restorations to treat black triangles and close diastemata. Attendees will also learn a new technique of composite placement allows the clinician to perform conservative, additive only dentistry resulting in strength, durability and esthetics. 

Course Objectives:

  1. Learn how the process allows us to create monolithic restorations directly in the mouth
  2. Learn how to solve anterior esthetic dilemmas such as the anterior diastema and black triangle
  3. Learn how to achieve the 3 step "Rock Star Polish”

About the Speaker: Dr. Taras Konanec graduated in 1997 from McGill University and is presently co-owner of Drummond Dental Group in downtown Montreal where he practices full time. Dr. Konanec is presently an assistant professor teaching in his 23nd year at McGill University in both the departments of Operative Dentistry and Practice Management. He is also the 2018 recipient of McGill Faculty of Dentistry Ralph Silverstone Teaching Award. Dr. Konanec's passions lie in minimally invasive dentistry techniques enhanced by the use the dental operating microscope in daily practice. He incorporates principles of Biomimetic Dentistry into his practice and teaching. As a member of the Richard V. Tucker study club, he is an ardent fan of the use of cast gold in the posterior teeth and he loves to speak to his patients about it's long term benefits. He focuses on the use of the Bioclear Method to restore the esthetic dilemas of black triangles and diastemas in the anterior teeth. Dr. Konanec is certified at all three levels from the Bioclear Learning Center in Tacoma, Washington and has been teaching the Bioclear Method for over 6 years now.

Arizona AGD is designated as an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by the AGD for Fellowship/Mastership and membership maintenance credit.
