April 6, 2022: Oral Manifestations of Vitamin Deficiencies & Other Systemic Health Conditions with Dr. Austin Shackelford DMD, MPH

Course Description: This webinar will review a variety of oral manifestations of systemic health conditions. It will also explore differential diagnosis of these oral conditions, as well as provide insight for recommended therapeutics.

Objectives:

  • Obtain an understanding of different oral manifestations of vitamin deficiencies and other systemic health conditions.
  • Provide instruction on recommended course of action and/or treatment for patients presenting with such manifestations.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Austin Shackelford is the 5th generation of his family to take part in the dental profession here in Phoenix, Arizona. After being born and raised in Arcadia, Dr. Shackelford went on to attend the University of Utah, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Latin and served as captain of the baseball team. He returned home for dental school and graduated in the top 5% of his class at ATSU Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Dr. Shackelford furthered his education by completing three years of specialty training in the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York City. Dr. Shackelford is excited to continue his family legacy and to provide optimal care to his patients using his strong foundation in general dentistry and his specialty training in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of oral diseases. Dr. Shackelford is a member of the American Dental Association, Arizona Dental Association, and is a fellow of The American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology. In his free time, he enjoys running, biking, and spending time with his wife, Carleigh, and their Australian Shepherd, Raine.

April 13, 2022: Exploring Differences Between Complete Dentures & Implant Retained Prostheses with Dr. Tamer El-Gendy DMD, BDS, MS

Course Description: This presentation will help dentists understand indications for implant retained prostheses in edentulous patients, as well as review important anatomical landmarks for fabrication of complete dentures without implant support. It will cover a basic review of removable prosthodontics.

Objectives:

  • Provide comprehensive review of removable prosthodontic principles including case selection and anatomic considerations.
  • Explore differences between implant retained prostheses and removable prosthesis, including differences in case selection and clinical steps.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Tamer El-Gendy is an Associate Professor and Director of Prosthodontic Department at The Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. He graduated from Cairo University (Egypt) – School of Dentistry in 1996. He completed his Advanced Prosthodontic training and his Masters degree at the University of Minnesota in 2001. He also completed a Postdoctoral Implant Dentistry Fellowship at The Ohio State University in 2002 where he focused on restoring advanced implant patients and treating implant complications. In 2002, he became a full-time assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He was awarded the Larry Peterson Outstanding Young Educator Award by the Ohio State University in 2004 and The Outstanding Teacher of the year in 2005 and 2009. He teaches Complete Denture, All ceramic restorations and Dental Implant course to pre-doctoral and graduate students at The Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral health. He lectures nationally and internationally in several continuing education courses and meetings.

April 20, 2022: Fundamentals of Implantology with Dr. Satish Kumar DMD, MDSc, MS

Course Description: With an increasing number of general practitioners placing dental implants, it is important to put an emphasis on the fundamental science of implantology. This course will have different anatomical and restorative guidelines for implant placement, as well as explore case selection for implant placement in a general practice.

Objectives:

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of fundamental implant placement guidelines regarding anatomy and desired restorative outcomes.
  • Develop clinical judgment for appropriate candidates for implant placement.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Kumar’s educational background includes advanced specialty training in periodontics, oral medicine, temporomandibular disorders, and orofacial pain, all at the Ostrow School of Dentistry of University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Dr. Kumar is a board-certified specialist and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, the American Board of Oral Medicine, and the American Board of Orofacial Pain. He currently serves as a Professor and Director of Periodontics at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH), A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona. Prior to joining ASDOH, Dr. Kumar taught and provided patient care at the Ostrow School of Dentistry of University of Southern California and at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Kumar is a certified evidence reviewer by the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD) where he also teaches the practice of applying best available clinical research evidence to patient care. He is an invited lecturer and provides continuing education courses in his areas of clinical expertise throughout the country. He has won several awards for his efforts in education as well as research including American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation’s Educator Scholarship and AAP’s Balint Orban Memorial Award. Dr. Kumar has published about 70 original articles, reviews, critical summaries, and book chapters. Dr. Kumar provides care of private patients on a part-time basis at the Greater Phoenix Periodontics and Implants, Mesa, AZ.

Arizona AGD is designated as an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by the AGD for Fellowship/Mastership and membership maintenance credit. Approval does not imply acceptance by a state or provincial board of dentistry or AGD endorsement. The current term of approval extends from January 2, 2023 to January 1, 2027. Provider ID# 219287
