Course Description:
This course will provide a fundamental overview of oral pathology lesions and diseases that the general dental practitioner must know for the competent care of patients. In the morning session, the steps of performing a comprehensive extra-oral and intra-oral exam will be detailed. Normal variants and common oral lesions, along with significant findings such as oral cancers, encountered in each specific location of the oral cavity will be described. The appropriate treatment of these lesions will also be included. The afternoon session will focus on the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal diseases. These diseases will range from recurrent oral aphthous and herpetic ulcers to candidiasis to the auto-immune conditions classified under the clinical diagnosis of desquamative gingivitis, which include lichen planus, mucous membrane pemphigoid, erythema multiforme and the life-threatening pemphigus vulgaris. Lesions and diseases that should be referred to an oral pathologist or oral medicine specialist for appropriate management will be identified. Interactive patient cases to encourage audience participation will be included at the end of both sessions.
Course Objectives/Goals:
1. List the steps of a comprehensive extra-oral and intra-oral exam and recognize normal structures and variants of normal.
2. Identify common oral lesions and significant conditions such as oral cancers found in each specific site of the oral cavity and describe their management.
3. Diagnose oral mucosal diseases including oral ulcers, candidiasis, and autoimmune conditions that fall under the category of desquamative gingivitis.
4. Describe treatment options for oral mucosal diseases and recognize the conditions that require referral to an oral pathologist or oral medicine specialist.
