Course Description:

Through completion of this webinar, attendees will gain in-depth understanding of the specialty of orofacial pain, the most common orofacial pain disorders and their impact, how to assess and understand patient complexity, and the goals of evidence-based treatments.

This course is dedicated to the physiology, diagnosis and treatment of pain felt in the mouth, jaws, face and other disorders of non-odontogenic origin.  Generally, this is pain in the head, face and TM Joint structures that is of non-odontogenic origin.  The topic is as much medicine as dentistry and important for practitioners to understand so that referral and or treatment can be accurate and precise for the benefit of our patients.

Course Objectives:

  • How to identify and stratify mild, moderate, and severe TMD conditions in your clinical practice.
  • Evidence-based management strategies of TMD conditions including oralappliances, botulinum toxin injections, triggerpoint injections, TMJ injections and medications.
  • When to refer the patient to orofacial pain specialists and other medical specialists.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Nojan Bakhtiari graduated from New York University College of Dentistry in 2011 and completed a GPR at Kingbrook Jewish Medical Center in 2012. Following his interest in Orofacial Pain, he went on to complete a two-year Orofacial Pain Residency at NYU Lutheran Medical Center. Dr. Bakhtiari is a board-certified TMJ and Orofacial Pain specialist in New York City. He is a leading expert in the field and maintains a full-time private practice limited to the evidencebased care of TMD, orofacial pain, headaches and sleep apnea. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Bakhtiari previously directed the Orofacial Pain service at Yale and was a Professor at the University of Connecticut. He is President-Elect of the NYU Dentistry Alumni Association, and on the council of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. Dr. Nojan has lectured nationwide on TMD, bruxism and Botox at various universities, hospitals, dental societies, and conferences. He has numerous publications and speaks nationally at conferences. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and a Diplomate in the American Board of Orofacial Pain.
