Course Description:

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a second generation platelet concentrate to be utilized as a scaffold containing completely natural growth factors. It follows the logical concept that by improving tissue vascularization to defects, one simultaneously improves tissue regeneration. It is a cost-effective and natural way to regenerate tissue. As a dental provider, using PRF in the appropriate situations will accelerate wound healing, improve bone graft stability, and promote predictable soft tissue regeneration.

The hands-on portion of this course will involve hands-on phlebotomy techniques and practice as well as introduce you to the equipment and instruments used from beginning to end with placing a PRF membrane in a patient’s socket after extractions.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • To review the indications and mechanism of PRF membrane
  • To practice performing phlebotomy techniques on each other
  • To demonstrate competent use of a centrifuge and related instruments for PRF membrane placement

Tentative Course Schedule:

8:00am - 10:30am: Dr. Tinisha Notice is our periodontist who will be lecturing on tissue regeneration with emphasis on PRF.

10:30am - 12:00pm: Dr. Shelby Olson is our dental anesthesiologist who will lecture on arm anatomy and foundational knowledge for drawing blood.

1:00 - 5:00pm: Both Dr. Notice and Dr. Olson (alongside Biohorizons) will help with hands-on activities. Doctors will draw blood on each other, centrifuge the blood, and how to manipulate and work with the PRF after centrifuge with the available instruments provided by Biohorizons.
